Poisoning of Emperor Violating Korea’s Sovereignty

Date: 15/01/2026 | Source: Naenara (En) | Read original version at source

Emperor Kojong, monarch of the feudal Joson dynasty, was poisoned to death by the Japanese imperialists on January 21, 1919.

The murder was an unprecedentedly heinous crime of violating national sovereignty of feudal Korea, and it was a plot hatched by the Japanese imperialists to cover up the truth of the faked “Ulsa five-point treaty” and to realize their military occupation of Korea.

In November 1905, despite the opposition of Emperor Kojong, Japan forced the government of feudal Korea into signing the “Ulsa five-point treaty” to put it under its control. But it thought that its bid for colonial rule of Korea might be hampered by Kojong, so it got down to a plot to remove him.

In these circumstances, Kojong sent three emissaries to the Second International Peace Conference held in The Hague, the Netherlands, in 1907 in order to declare the five-point treaty null and void and expose Japan’s gross violation of Korea’s sovereignty.

Japan took the event as an occasion to strip Kojong of his authority.

The Japanese imperialists overtly pressurized Kojong into stepping down from the throne, claiming it was an insult to them that Korea whose diplomatic rights had been “transferred” to Japan by the five-point treaty sent emissaries to the international conference without permission of the “resident-general.” And they finally poisoned him to death.

The poisoning of Kojong is only an example of Japan’s brutality and cruelty.

Throughout its military occupation, Japan had reduced Korea to its complete colony and stopped at nothing to enslave the Koreans.

With such a murderous rhetoric that the Koreans must obey the Japanese law or die, the Japanese imperialists ruthlessly deprived the former of their basic political freedom and rights and went to the extremes to wipe Korea off the world map.

It has been over eight decades since Japan was defeated in the Second World War. Instead of apology, soul-searching and reparations for its past wrongdoings, however, Japan is still totally denying them and making rather more desperate attempts at reinvasion to repeat what it had committed in the previous century, which constitutes a grave challenge to the mankind’s desire for peace.

This adds fuel to the hatred and will of revenge of the Korean people.

They will never forget what their sworn enemy had committed in the past but make it pay dearly for all of it without fail.
