In the DPRK tourism industry helps promote cultural efflorescence and development in relevant regions. It is of long-term significance in the overall economic growth of the country.
Flanked by seas on the east and west sides and having many mountains, the country boasts a number of celebrated mountains and spots famous for unusual scenery.
The nature of the area in and around Mt Paektu, which was put on the global geopark list in April 2025, is one of its precious tourism resources.
The area is featured by the geology and landform created by several volcanic eruptions, fauna and flora in the environment of the alpine area, and other natural resources for tourism, which unfold a peculiar landscape. Unusually high and steep mountainous terrains and rough and deep valleys and ravines provide favourable conditions for climbing, mountaineering and other tourist activities.
The sunrise and the Lake Chon on top of the mountain are unique scenes of the area. The Paektu Hot Spring is a renowned mineral water resource with medicinal effects, and the Phothae area is favourable to ski tourism.
Samjiyon in Ryanggang Province, a typical mountainous city in the northern part of the country, is a characteristic combined four-season mountainous tourist resort.
The Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, an iconic coastal city of national value built on the Kalma Peninsula noted for its beautiful seaside landscape, got into service in July last year.
The premier resort satisfies all needs for sporting, recreational and coastal sightseeing activities all year round.
Among the social tourism resources are the historical relics in the city of Kaesong, Pohyon Temple in Mt Myohyang, Kwangbop Temple in Mt Taesong, Pobun Hermitage in Mt Ryongak and Three Tombs of Kangso, which showcase the long history and cultural brilliance of the Korean nation.
The Tower of the Juche Idea, the Arch of Triumph and other monumental structures and new, modern streets and a variety of cultural events are also available for tourism resources.
In recent years recreational facilities and holiday camps have been built across the country to improve its tourist infrastructure.
