The Korean people have a long tradition of developing the ceramic industry.
They began to make and use a wide selection of ceramics of various shapes and with different patterns in the primitive age. They further developed the techniques of manufacturing earthenware in the period of Ancient Joson (early 30th century BC-108 BC).
The gourd-shaped pot preserved in the Korean Central History Museum is typical of earthenware dating back to the period of Ancient Joson.
A fine assortment of ceramics was produced also in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668).
The ceramic art developed steadily in the country. The ceramics produced in the period of Koryo (918-1392) were so refined that they were well known to foreign countries.
Koryo porcelain is classified into celadon, white, black, brown and crimson ceramics in terms of ground colour and into embossed, concave, open-worked, thick-line patterned, inlaid and gilt styles in terms of decorative techniques.
What was produced in the largest quantity and best-known among these categories was the jade green celadon. Particularly, the celadon inlaid with various patterns won admiration across the world as it was considered the acme of ceramic art.
In the later period of Koryo there were porcelains produced by mixing clay of various colours such as white, grey and red.
The dressed and white porcelains produced in large quantities in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910) were also widely known around the world.
Today the DPRK produces a wide list of beautiful and elegant ceramics to meet the public sentiments.
