The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung visited a chemical factory in Hungnam in February 1948, three years after Korea was liberated from Japan’s military occupation.
Guided by the factory’s chief engineer, he made his way to the carbide workshop. He learned in detail about the output, supply of raw materials and restoration of the carbide production facilities. He asked if they could rebuild by their own efforts the factory destroyed by the Japanese in the wake of their defeat.
After receiving a positive reply from the chief engineer, he said: You should do it on your own. The point is that you should believe in your own strength. We should be free from dependence on others. When we decide to do something, we should completely believe in our own strength and overcome the obstacles ahead by our own efforts. If so, we can manage to build a new country and wage the revolution properly.
Looking at the workers dealing with the discharge from the calcium-carbide furnace, he added: Seeing the workers working at the furnace, I feel a surge of encouragement. The strength of the working class is so great. They will create a new world.
He called on officials to always pay close attention to labour protection for the workers and provide them with satisfactory conditions for cultural recreation.
