The Taesong District Juvenile Sports School in Pyongyang is well-known as a training base of promising women footballers.
The women’s football team run by the school has been in the limelight of the country since May 1999, only two years after its formation.
The school has made due efforts to acquire advanced football techniques in close contact with the Academy of Sports Science and carry out training programs suited to the players’ age and physical fitness and psychological characteristics.
Main emphasis in coaching was put on teaching basic techniques and developing individual skills and special virtues possessed by each trainee. Meanwhile, efforts to have all trainees prepared to proactively deal with any circumstances as well as to organize and lead matches went on consistently. As a result, all members of the team have been prepared to field the ball at a quick speed through quick and long pass. The school has held frequent examinations according to strict principles to single out those who are physically suitable for football.
The school won gold medals at the football event of the 43rd sports contest attended by juvenile sports schools across the country and several other competitions.
The Korean women’s football team won the trophy at the 3rd U-20 World Cup Finals held in Russia, creating a football myth in the 21st century. Among the team were Jong Pok Sim, forward from the April 25 Sports Team, Kim Ok Sim, “iron-will” defender from the Ri Myong Su Sports Team and Ri Jin Ok, leading forward in the middle ground from the Pyongyang Sports Team, who were all brought up at the school. They were awarded the titles of Labour Hero and People’s Sportsperson. Today they devote their all to developing the country’s football with great pride.
The young women footballers at the school intensify their training to attain a higher goal under the guidance of the well-qualified coaches Kang Chol Nam and Kim Kwang Suk, not rest with the success their team has achieved.
