It is said that paduk has ten thousand skillful moves whereas chess has a thousand.
Therefore, paduk is called a skilled manoeuvre game, which is helpful in developing intelligence of the people with deep yet diversified moves. In the past many military strategists used to improve their strategy and tactics while playing paduk. Paduk is widely encouraged in the DPRK.
The Korean Paduk Association was organized under the Korean Taekwon-Do Committee and paduk centres and houses have been built in provinces.
Everyone, men and women, young and old, can learn and enjoy paduk if they want to.
The Korean Taekwon-Do Committee and Taekwon-Do provincial teams train professional paduk players and Korea University of Physical Education educates paduk technical personnel.
The Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace and other schoolchildren’s palaces and halls across the country run paduk groups.
Parents want their children to learn paduk.
Jon Se Hyo, winner of the recent national children’s paduk contest, from Sinwon Kindergarten of Pothonggang District, Pyongyang, began to learn paduk when he was 4 years old. He always thinks of paduk moves even as he sits at the piano and table. He often surprises his paduk teacher by solving hard and complicated problems readily.
Paduk makes people lead a cultured way of life.
“There is an old saying: ‘In the time of mirth take heed.’ It was derived from a story that once upon a time a woodman was so interested in paduk played by the spirits that he did not realize how much time passed. When he came to his senses, his ax handle rotted”, said Rim Sok Bom, 44-year-old winner of the men’s second-level singles event of the national amateur paduk contest. He could not spend a day without playing paduk, he added.
Paduk is also good for health as it relieves the people of fatigue and develops their thinking.
It is a national intangible cultural heritage element.
