The Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace in Mangyongdae District in the capital city of Pyongyang is a base for extracurricular education of schoolchildren. Students come to the palace after school and cultivate their talents in sci-tech, sports and art groups they have joined according to their tastes and aptitudes. Its instructor Jang Yong Ae is well-known for her good education in vocal music. Born as the first daughter of an ordinary worker’s family in Kusong City, North Phyongan Province, she played the violin so well during her middle-school days that she often participated in her school art performance and provincial-level one. But in the second year of the middle school, she made a foray into vocal music. One day, after picnic lunch, there was a recreation party. Students began to sing their favourite songs in turn. She sang the lyric song “We Are the Happiest in the World” with deep emotion, touching the heartstrings of the audience. She received three encores. That day, her teacher advised her to turn her major from instrumental music to vocal music. So, she agreed with it. After graduating from the middle school, she received a regular education in vocal music at the then Pyongyang University of Music and Dance and became a singer of an art troupe and, later, a vocal music instructor at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace. As an instructor, she made tireless efforts to develop scientific teaching methods with the main emphasis on cultivating the individual characters of her students. In the course of this, she produced an effective teaching method helpful to her students in acquiring a correct breathing method. Among her disciples was a student who was called an “oriole” of schoolchildren’s art circle. Late in Juche 108 (2019) when she was making preparations for the New Year performance, she found that a member of the art group had an aptitude for singing folk songs. She paid attention to her posture and breathing method and gave scientific guidance to her acting. Her solo was acclaimed by the audience in the New Year performance in Juche 109 (2020) and the following year. She has trained tens of reserve soloists, who sang on the stage of New Year performance and, later, were assigned to art troupes and educational institutions. She developed a guiding method for properly linking breathing and trill in singing folk songs and various other teaching methods for which she received a certificate of registration of new teaching methods, and published over 20 essays, including “Problems arising in the exercise of the vocal organs”. She is still devoting her wisdom and energy to training reserve singers in order to prove herself worthy of the benevolence of the country which gave her university education and put her forward as a winner of Kim Il Sung scholarship, artiste and educator.
