The Land and Environment Protection Cooperation Service is making efforts to improve and preserve the ecological environments such as protection of biodiversity, prevention of soil from desertification and introduction of agroforestry.
It has set up an office for protecting the wetland in the west coast in Mundok County, South Phyongan Province, a main flyway of migratory birds, and mapped out a management plan. It takes steps to protect biodiversity on the coast of the West Sea of Korea, improve the agro-ecological environment on the hillocks and flatlands and introduce agroforestry into several areas.
It has established a base for producing agrochemicals and parasitic bees for stamping out harmful insects and is introducing advanced forest management techniques.
It has manufactured biogas stoves as part of the efforts to disseminate techniques for reducing the emission of greenhouse gas effecting the global warming and the dependence on forests and introduced them into many units. Its new design of a floating biogas tank cover was highly appreciated in the 16th national exhibition of inventions held last year.
It conducts vigorous publicity activities for environmental protection through publication of such books as “Migratory Birds in the West Coast of Korea”, “Biodiversity in the West Coast of Korea”, “Ecological Environment in the Countryside and the People’s Life”, “Industrialization of Sapling Production” and “An Illustrated Book of Natural Enemy Insects against Forest Harmful Insects”.
It conducts cooperation and exchange of science and technology with international bodies and its counterparts around the world.
Kim Kwang Phil, head of the service, said: Environmental protection is one of the most important tasks before mankind. We will make proactive efforts to create clean, green environments.
