Yangdok County in South Phyongan Province has many hot springs that have special virtues for the promotion of health and treatment of diseases.
The hot springs are rich in sulphur content and extremely small in radon content with an annual yield of a considerable amount of water and high pharmacological actions and treatment efficacy. According to a historical record, Sokthang Hot Spring has been in wide use since hundreds of years ago.
According to an ancient document on the Sokthang Hot Spring, three spring wells were found 8 km north of the county and the water gushing from them was very hot.
The Korean ancestors originally called this hot spring Tolthang, meaning spring water gushing out of rock crevices. Later, it was renamed Sokthang.
The inhabitants in the area made various shapes of bathtubs near the hot spring and used the water for the treatment of skin diseases. They also used the high-temperature water for steaming medicinal herbs since long ago.
Sokthang Hot Spring is highly efficacious for medical treatment, particularly for softening the skin, promoting cardiac contractility, improving blood circulation, allaying inflammation and boosting plerosis, deallergizing and stimulating intestinal peristalsis.
The Yangdok Hot Spring is also found in the Yangdok area. There are two places where hot water gushes out, that is, Sothangji in the county township and Taethangji about 2 km away from the Yangdok Railway Station.
The hot spring has also been used since olden times. Sothangji was called Sogyongthang as it has been used by the blind. A historic document records that tepid spring water gushes out of two places 28 km west of the county.
The high-temperature Yangdok Hot Spring belongs to one of typical ones rich in sulfur content in the country whose key components are simple silica, sulfur, fluorine-weak alkaline. It has the same virtue with the Sokthang Hot Spring.
In general, there are such methods of treatment as drinking, gastric lavage, intrarectal application and systemic bath according to indications.
According to analysis, the hot springs in the Yangdok area are highly efficacious for the treatment of chronic eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, arthritis, traumas, sequelae of operations, neuralgia, neuritis, chronic gastritis, gout, obesity, diabetes, etc.
Today, the Yangdok area has undergone a facelift as befits a hot spring resort thanks to the people-oriented policies of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
