The following happened when the great leader Kim Jong Il guided the construction of the Ice Rink.
One day he went to the site, together with officials, to select the location of the rink.
Looking round the wide space between the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium and the Changgwang Health Complex, he was very satisfied to say that when an ice rink was built here the area of the stadium would take an comprehensive appearance.
Much encouraged, the officials proposed to launch the project immediately from the following day.
After a moment’s thought Kim Jong Il told: The ice rink will be used by our people, so its construction should be started after hearing their opinion; you’d better prepare for the project on one side, and have a discussion again after hearing the opinion of the people on the designed model.
The officials were moved by ennobling popular traits of Kim Jong Il who regarded aspirations and demands of the people as a criterion of his thoughts and practice.
According to his suggestion a balloon was flown at the same height as design and a model was established by stretching some ropes to compare it with real building.
Some time later, he was pleased to hear that all those who saw the model liked its unique style, appropriate height and ideal place, and said: Everything is all right if the people like it; as their requirement for architecture has grown quiet higher, the Ice Rink should be built at the highest level with their demand as a criterion.
