The DPRK joined the Global Standard One (GS1) in January 1999.
The GS1 of the DPRK, in collaboration with the international organization, has since carried on the work of instituting, registering and managing the ID codes of goods circulated at home.
The work of introducing and using the technology of 1D (bar codes) and 2D codes poses itself as an important undertaking to put the whole processes of goods, ranging from their production to marketing, circulation and recycle, on an IT basis.
“Our country has created legal, institutional and social environments for 1D and 2D codes, including the Law of the DPRK on Commodity Identification Codes and established a well-knit system from the centre to the lowest echelons,” said secretary general Jong Kun Mo of the DPRK GS1.
The DPRK GS1 has unified and managed the institution, use and dissemination of 1D and 2D codes.
It institutes and disseminates 1D and 2D codes for all goods produced by industrial establishments and gives additional 2D codes to clarify such relevant quality contents as inspection date, shelf life and quarantine inspection for imports.
It has introduced various information service systems such as a code control system by means of a cellphone to help its user get more detailed information about the qualities of goods, their production date, etc. On this basis, it guarantees the safety and credit of goods, promotes production activities in industrial establishments, makes commercial service activities IT-based and accommodates the convenience of people.
It also makes efforts to intensify the research into solving the technical problems arising in the development of more scientific and reliable 1D and 2D codes as well as their introduction and use.
It is expanding the sphere of use of code technology into such sectors of traffic, maritime transport, public health, banking, etc.
