The socialist education system of the DPRK, which gives education to all Korean people, has a deep historical root.
During the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle organized and led by President Kim Il Sung, young Korean communists enforced free education at Samsong School in Wujiazi, Jinmyong School in Kalun and Samgwang School in Guyushu.
The people’s revolutionary government, established in the first half of the 1930s in the guerrilla bases in the form of liberated areas, abolished the colonial slave education system of the Japanese imperialists and enforced the policies for providing the popular masses with the right to genuine education.
Even under difficult conditions, it built schools for the members of the Children’s Corps and took a measure to take a census of school-aged children and enable them to study compulsorily.
While giving them free education, it also fully provided them with food, daily necessaries and school supplies, including uniforms, shoes and textbooks.
It built dormitories for the children of martyrs and guerrillas and orphans and supplied them with necessities for their studying and living on a preferential basis.
In particular, in the difficult situation of continued battles to frustrate the large-scale “punitive” offensives of the Japanese aggressor troops, it ensured that free compulsory education at the Children’s Corps schools continued without letup.
It also night schools for adults, which was aimed at launching a campaign against illiteracy.
Thanks to its education policy, the people in the guerrilla zones could fully exercise their right to learning and actively turned out in the sacred struggle for the country’s liberation.
As mentioned above, the socialist education system of the DPRK struck its root in the period of anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.
