김명남은 4차례의 세계력기선수권대회와 2차례의 올림픽경기대회, 4차례의 아시아력기선수권대회를 비롯한 여러 국제경기들에 참가하여 세계 새 기록을 9차례 수립하고 금메달로 조국의 영예를 떨친 이름있는 체육인이다.
그가 제27차 아시아력기선수권대회 70㎏급경기에서 종합 1위를 하고 세계 새 기록을 수립하였다는 보고를 받으신 위대한 령도자 김정일동지께서는 못내 기뻐하시며 대단하다고, 선수권대회에서 그저 1등을 한것만도 큰 성과인데 끌어올리기, 추켜올리기, 종합에서 각각 세계 새 기록을 세운것은 특출한 성과라고 하시며 그를 온 나라가 떠받들도록 높이 내세워주시였다.
그후 조선체육대학을 졸업하고 력기감독으로 사업하면서 김명남은 정신육체적으로, 기술적으로 튼튼히 준비된 미더운 력기선수들을 키워내는데 자신의 모든것을 바쳐나가고있다.
