U.S. Fiasco in Afghanistan – Inevitability of History

Date: 05/09/2021 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

The U.S., which boasts itself of being the world military power, withdrew its troops from Afghanistan. This has made the U.S. a laughingstock of the world, incurring censure from it.

In the middle of this, “The Straits Times” carried an article entitled “Drawing Lessons from United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan” dated August 30 that reads to the following effect:

According to it, the former U.S. defense secretary Robert McNamara admitted the humiliating military defeat of the U.S. in his 1995 book, “In Retrospect: The Tragedy And Lessons Of Vietnam”, with his saying that “we were wrong, terribly wrong”.

New York Times columnist Ezra Klein derided that the central lesson of the Afghanistan failure is “how little we actually know and understand about other countries”. “And Afghanistan is the apex example of that. And we still didn’t understand how hollow the government we had constructed was”.

Yale Professor Amy Chua tweeted: “We tend to view the world in terms of great ideological battles – Capitalism versus Communism, Democracy versus Authoritarianism, the ‘Free World’ versus ‘The Axis of Evil’. This blindness has been the Achilles heel of foreign policy, from Vietnam to Afghanistan to Iraq.”

Well before the denouement in Afghanistan, Dr. Andrew Bacevich, president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft of the U.S., wrote in April: “The trillions of dollars wasted and the many thousands of lives destroyed are gone for good, with precious little to show in return.”

The comments by the former officials and experts of the U.S. show the inevitability of denouement in Afghanistan resulted from the policy of aggression and plunder historically pursued by the U.S.
