The Korean ancestors made many achievements in the astronomy sector.
Chiljongsan , a national classic, is a book describing the method of making a calendar. It was completed in 1442 and published in 1444.
Chiljong means the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in the classical documents.
The then scholars edited the book with an eye to making a calendar in conformity with the reality of the country, based on the elucidation of a law peculiar to the location and movements of celestial bodies.
The book, which comprehensively systematized the theory on the location and movements of celestial bodies, is divided into two chapters and every chapter is sub-divided into provisions.
It describes the method of deciding the number of days per month and 24 seasonal divisions of the year by the lunar calendar, the theory on the movements of the sun and the moon, the method of deciding time by means of stars, the method of deciding the length of day and night, the theory on forecasting the solar and lunar eclipses, the theory on the movements of planets, etc.
It is a valuable national classic that showcases the level of developed astronomy in the first half of the 15th century.
