Physicians of the Angiography Department at Kim Man Yu Hospital stand out across the DPRK in cardiovascular surgery.
For decades they have worked on interventional therapy to establish procedures to treat various kinds of cardiovascular diseases.
The interventional therapy is of great clinical significance as it helps remove the root causes of diseases by a minimally invasive method, not by surgical incision, said Kim Ok Gyong, PhD and associate professor, who heads the Angiography Department. She is one of the local authorities on interventional therapy.
By the late 1990s a few countries had a monopoly on the therapy. With an ambitious goal, a research team of the department studied hard to complete interventional procedures that are suited to the constitutional characteristics of the Korean people.
To find a more rational method and even a clue vital to the project, they had to do trials and research on animals up to scores of times. Eventually, in the early 2000s, they succeeded in applying interventional therapy to a cardiovascular disease for the first time.
According to Ya Myong Chon, a physician, interventional procedures produce immediate effects on cardiovascular diseases such as congenital heart diseases, with the treatment period very short.
A woman living in Sosong District, Pyongyang, who underwent an interventional procedure in May last year, said that treating her disease was supposed to require surgical operation but, to her satisfaction, interventional therapy made it simple and much less painful.
In the course of expanding the scope of the application of the interventional therapy, the team went on to complete the procedures for over 30 kinds of vascular diseases including coronary artery stricture and atrial septal defects, curing many patients. Meanwhile, they managed to develop and introduce over 10 kinds of medical supplies and apparatuses such as cardiovascular vehicle and closer for congenital heart diseases.
Today they are working to upgrade their skills and broaden their application.
