In September 2020, the Komdok area, a leading mineral producer in the DPRK, suffered severe damages due to a typhoon, with roads and railway roadbeds washed away in many sections and dwelling houses destroyed.
The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un immediately convened the Sixth Enlarged Meeting of the Seventh Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and issued an order of the Party Central Military Commission to mobilize units of the Korean People’s Army in the rehabilitation campaign.
In October that year he visited the area by train across a railway bridge that was temporarily built on piers with stones piled up in wooden frames. Going round the rehabilitation site, he unfolded a far-reaching plan and blueprint for transforming the Komdok area.
That day Comrade Kim Jong Un said to accompanying officials that he would not get from remorse for having new houses built only for the flood victims, adding that the country is actually in economic difficulties but it cannot be delayed any longer to provide the people in the Komdok area with lovely houses. We should build modern houses for the local people at an early date so that they could lead a more civilized life, he said.
He expressed his determination to set the ongoing rehabilitation work as the first stage and complete it qualitatively with all-out efforts and to build 25 000 houses in the Komdok Mining Complex, Taehung Youth Hero Mine and Ryongyang Mine during the five-year plan to be set forth at the Eighth Party Congress—as the second stage.
As a result, a housing construction proceeded apace in the Komdok area, and a new town, peculiar and modern in terms of architectural beauty and in good harmony with the gorge landform, began to take shape.
