What Safeguards Genuine Democracy?

Date: 07/12/2021 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

As is already known, the U.S. took an initiative of holding a “Summit for Democracy” from December 9-10, and it put the figures from Taiwan on the “list of participants”.

In this context, Chinese foreign minister, at the video conference with Hungarian foreign minister, pointed out that the open provision of the international arena to “Taiwan independence” forces by the U.S. despite its claim not to support “Taiwan independence” merely proves its failure to live up to promise. He also stressed that Taiwan is not pawn of the U.S., but is an integral part of China’s sacred territories.

He continued to underline the fact that democracy is not a political tool at the disposal of the United Sates, but a common value sought after by all countries and that the world needs solidarity, not division; and cooperation, rather than confrontation.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. also denounced that the mere fact that the U.S. is trying to misuse “democracy” as a geopolitical tool for pursuing its world strategy is as good as wrecking a havoc on democratic value, saying that the U.S.-sponsored “Summit for Democracy” is an expression of the typical cold war mentality that instigates a new division.

It is absolutely preposterous that the U.S.-which makes it its business to commit aggression, interference and massacre in many parts of the world-puts forward “defending against authoritarianism, fighting corruption, and promoting respect for human rights” as the main theme of “Summit for Democracy”, as if it were a mouthpiece of justice.

Today, conflicts and disputes between the races and nations do not stop in in many parts of the world. This is the consequence of the U.S. acts of interference which stretches out tentacles to these countries under the banner of “democracy”.

As the 2003 Iraqi crisis shows, the U.S. occupied Iraq by force with yet another excuse that it will provide Iraqi people with “freedom” and “democracy”, when the excuse to invade Iraq did not work, that was to “dismantle WMDs”.

After its occupation of Iraq, it professed itself to be the “guardian of peace” and “spokesperson of free world” saying that it would stay in Iraq until the “democratic order” is established and Iraqi people enjoy “freedom”.

But the only thing the U.S. did in Iraq in the name of “maintenance of stability” and “establishment of democratic order” was that it had clamped down on the Iraqi people in their just struggle to oppose the U.S. and achieve independence, describing them as “violent acts” and “acts of terrorism”, and it had tortured and killed peaceful residents with showing no mercy.

Not content with this, the U.S. started the “color revolution” in the Middle East replacing the governments of several countries including Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen. In 2011, it devastated Libya by dispatching the NATO forces.

Consequently, the peace of the Middle East was completely destroyed and people in the region went through the holocaust of civil war.

We learned a lesson from here. An illusion about “U.S.-style democracy” only leads to self-destruction, and a weak country can never safeguard the sovereignty of the country and the dignity of the nation in today’s world where the high-handedness and arbitrariness of the imperialists are on the rampage.

Against this backdrop, the Chinese Newspaper “Global Times”, in its comment a few days ago, clearly demonstrated the will to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity by dint of strong physical strength. It pointed out that allowing the Taiwan authority to participate in the “Summit for Democracy” is a provocation against China and that Beijing will enjoy an absolute support from the people for whatever steps it will take even if it involves ones to dispatch its fighters and warships to fly over the skies of Taiwan or to run into the U.S. battleship.

Progressive people of the world should be awake to the harsh reality of today where the weak can only fall victim to the strong, and they should direct primary efforts to strengthening their national power to safeguard the international justice.
