It was when different preparations were being arranged to splendidly celebrate the 60th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung.
Senior officials of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the state asked the President to approve the plan of celebratory functions.
But he stopped all the functions related to his birthday and disagreed with even a national event. As they repeatedly asked him to approve, he said that he would spend that day quietly in the countryside if they wanted.
When even the anti-Japanese war veterans requested him, he said that it was not because he did not appreciate their mind, but because celebrating his 60th birthday was of no significance in that busy time. Saying that he did not want to celebrate the day splendidly, he added he would be pleased if they let him spend the day quietly.
But the veterans did not budge.
They repeatedly told him that he should meet the people’s desire as their proposal reflected the minds of all the people.
Looking around them with warm eyes, he said that he would have a photo taken together with them and see an art performance given by schoolchildren if they really wished.
And he endorsed only one proposal for presenting gifts to the children all across the country on the occasion of his birthday on April 15.
