In the spring of 1912, a rumour circulated that a man of distinction would descend from heaven soon at Mangyongdae, a beautiful place where all kinds of fowers began to bloom one after another.
One day in mid-April, fishermen spread out fishing nets at a place where the Taedong and Sunhwa rivers converge early in the morning and waited for fishes to be caught, talking with each other on small boats. Suddenly the surroundings brightened and they looked up into the sky and jumped to their feet abruptly.
They saw a rain of stars pouring down, drawing a golden line from the sky.
It looked so wonderful that they shouted for joy, “A rain of stars!” In a moment, the rain of stars formed a large star and disappeared over Mangyong Hill.
Captivated by the sight, they forgot to haul in their nets and gazed at Mangyong Hill.
At daybreak at Mangyongdae that day, President Kim Il Sung, whom the Korean people acclaimed for the first time in their 5 000-year history, was born.
It was April 15 1912.
