It has been 76 years since the start of the Pothong River improvement project.
The Pothong River that meanders Pyongyang flooded the riverside, especially the Thosongrang (earthen embankment), West Pyongyang and Taetharyong areas in rainy season every year before the national liberation (August 15, 1945).
Over 50 000 people in the Walled City of Pyongyang suffered heavy human and material losses and more than 2 000 hectares of farmland and over 1 000 farmhouses around the city were submerged due to the flood in 1942.
President Kim Il Sung initiated the Pothong River improvement project after the liberation and called on all the people to start the work of harnessing the nature with the project in the ground-breaking ceremony on May 21, Juche 35 (1946) and personally broke the ground first. The project was the first undertaking by which Pyongyang citizens contributed to the building of a new Korea with patriotic labour and the first grand nature-harnessing work of the Korean people after the liberation.
Under the leadership of Kim Il Sung the project which required the citizens to remove over 420 000 cubic metres of soil was completed in a matter of 55 days.
A 10-kilometre-long canal was built along the marshes overgrown with weeds where the river had flowed and a cultural recreation ground was constructed in some 300 hectare area along the canal.
The Pothong River has been transformed into a river of paradise year after year resounding with the happy laughter of the people.
Along the riverside, Ponghwa, Chollima, Pulgun and Mansudae streets sprang up and such monumental structures as Pyongyang Indoor Stadium, People’s Palace of Culture, Ice Rink, Changgwang Health Complex and Chongnyu Restaurant were built.
In the new century of the Juche era, it has been developed into a river of happiness more wonderfully, which genuinely contributes to the cultural and leisure activities of the people, adding more to the scenic beauty of the capital city of Pyongyang. Commercial and public catering establishments, parks and recreation grounds including the Mansugyo Soft Drinks and Mansugyo Fish and Meat Shop were built on the banks of the Pothong River.
The Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District was newly built in April this year, boasting its unique architectural beauty and adding to the people’s pleasure.
The Pothong riverside which changes day after day beyond recognition is a criterion for showing the development of socialist Korea.
