Among the people who are engaged in their jobs for scores of years is Ri Yong Sim, a rockslide watcher at the Hyesan trackmen’s team.
What is different in her daily routine from others is that when others go to work in different clothes according to season, she makes rounds of the railway section she is in charge of in the same working clothes, returns home at midnight after ensuring safe passage of trains, and then does the household chores including checking her children’s homework and laundering. And the next day she leaves home again with a signal lamp.
It is easier said than done for a woman to be engaged for so long in such a job, rain or shine, which others hesitate to do.
Her husband had been a rockslide watchman until the moment of his life. Realizing the true human feature at the time, she followed in the footsteps of her husband.
Later, her son also became a rockslide watchman.
Once, when her son asked her to take an easier job, she said: “If we leave this post, another man should have to come to this isolated place. Even if he does so, he wouldn’t be as familiar with the geographical features of this place as you and I. Then the running of trains would be delayed.”
Whenever journalists would ask about her career, she would tell them to introduce the engine drivers who are contributing to the advance of the country.
As they treasure her sincerity with which she tries her best to contribute to the advance of the country, officials and employees of the team and engine drivers love and respect her.
Ri Yong Sim says: “The worth of one’s life is in the boundless devotion to their country, collective and comrades.”
