Paduk (go) is a game two persons play on a board with white and black stones. The players put their stones on the board in turn to encircle the opponent’s stones and capture “territory” to contend for victory. It is one of folk games the Koreans have long enjoyed.
The game has a long history in Korea.
According to a record, the Koguryo people liked the game very much as well as other sports and the Paekje people also liked it and preferred the sport to others.
In Korea paduk was widely played in the periods of Palhae, Later Silla, Koryo and the feudal Joson dynasty, as it further developed through the historical periods.
It is simple in apparatus and rule, but the moves are countless and very interesting. As all of the moves are associated with numbers, it is very effective in training and developing mathematical talents and intelligence of students and children, especially, preschool children.
And it enables children to develop spatial seeing power at the mere sight of a single diagram and cultivate a strong spirit of inquiry, a high level of creativity, composure and a competitive spirit.
