Tangun is the founding father of the Korean nation and the founder who built the first state in the history of Korea.
Originally, Tangun had long been regarded as a mythical being. But he was recognized as a real being in 1993 as his remains were unearthed in Kangdong County, Pyongyang.
Tangun, born as a son of a tribe chief in the Kangdong area of Pyongyang, tried hard to train martial arts from his childhood. Succeeding to his father, he became the chief at the age of 25. After revamping the primitive political mechanism, he organized power structure. In the early 30th century BC, he set up the capital at the Walled City of Pyongyang and founded Ancient Joson, the first slave state. According to identified data, he was active until he was over 60 years old, a rare-to-be-found macrobian in those days.
Thanks to his positive activities, Ancient Joson, which was founded as a small country in the Pyongyang area, developed into a big power covering vast areas by gradually conquering its minor neighbouring states.
As he founded the first state, the primitive ages came to an end in Korea, and the Korean nation entered the state era.
The Korean ancestors worshiped Tangun as the founding father of the nation and created various ceremonies, customs and myths related to him.
October 3, birthday of Tangun, is the National Foundation Day.
On the occasion, commemorative events take place in front of the Mausoleum of King Tangun which is located at the foot of Mt Taebak in Munhung-ri, Kangdong County, Pyongyang.
