The then vice-chairman of the Jagang Provincial Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea rushed to where Premier Kim Il Sung was immediately after hearing that he arrived in Kanggye following his visit to Manpho on his inspection tour of the province on October 11 Juche 38(1949).
As it was lunchtime, he had lunch ready in a nearby village and arrived at the Jangja riverside, where Kim Il Sung was conversing with his entourage by building fire there.
He hurriedly ran toward him and offered him a greeting. The Premier warmly welcomed the provincial Party official and invited him to lunch.
Pointing to a farm house nearby, he said that a pumpkin was procured at the house and suggested taking it together.
The local official stood there dumbfounded, unable to believe that the Premier would take the boiled pumpkin as a meal.
Then Kim Il Sung took the bewildered vice-chairman by the hand and guided him onto a flat rock to sit, before telling him an interesting story about the pumpkin and potato cakes.
Meanwhile, his attendants set the lunch table.
Seeing the Premier taking the boiled pumpkin willingly, the vice-chairman was moved to tears.
