Chairman Kim Jong Il called students who won a national schoolchildren’s solo contest on January 3 1989 and listened to their songs.
As he applauded, he said that though they were young, they sang well, congratulated them on their success in the solo contest and told them to study music harder to become singers and instrumentalists loved by the people.
Then, he gave an instruction to an official.
The official brought the students out of the room and the leader stood looking out of the window for a while.
As a youth league official wondered why they went out, an official quietly quoted the leader as saying that he called the students, who won the national solo contest organized by the League of Socialist Working Youth of Korea, that day in order to see what kind of clothes and shoes they wore, rather than listening to their songs.
After a while, students in new shoes and socks came back to the room and stood in a line in front of the leader.
He pressed the toes of the shoes to see whether they fitted well and examined the socks to see whether their colours matched the shoes, saying that he regarded students as his own sons and daughters.
