Accompanying President Kim Il Sung on a visit to a local unit on June 23 1952 in the midst of the Fatherland Liberation War, young Kim Jong Il happened to see an apricot tree.
After approaching the tree, he told an accompanying woman official in a grave tone that though there had been such a tree at his home in Pyongyang, it would have disappeared due to bombing.
After a while, he said that the tree reminded him of his mother and then looked over the sky of Pyongyang without saying anything for a while. He added that he could not forget the days when he picked up apricots from the tree in the garden and presented them to his father and mother and that he could still clearly remember the image of his mother who was pleased to receive the apricots. He said that whenever he missed his mother, he remembered a song that his mother had taught him, and quietly sang the song Nostalgia.
