Rodong Sinmun , the organ of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, dated January 3 Juche 89 (2000), carried the following article on the front page:
“A happy event in 2000 that pleases all people...
Sixteen babies were born between 00:00 and 01:00 on New Year’s Day, 110 in all that day, at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.”
The birth of children on New Year’s Day is not a front-page news. Everyone saw it as an everyday occurrence, but Chairman Kim Jong Il did not regard it as a usual thing.
After receiving the report on the births of 110 babies at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital on New Year’s Day in Juche 89 (2000), he was very pleased to say that the births of many children at the maternity hospital augur well for the prosperity of the country.
Regarding it as an important issue related to the future of the nation to give birth to many children from long ago, he had already taken a series of measures for women and children to be born even in the period when the country was undergoing difficulties.
He paid special attention to providing favourable conditions for their life, including the issue of supplying on a preferential basis various kinds of nutritious foodstuffs and daily necessities to women who gave birth to many children and nursing mothers and that of giving special benefits to women who bring up more than four children.
He also took steps to ensure that women who are diagnosed of having triplets would be admitted to the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital only with case history sheets issued by city and county hospitals and all triplets be brought up at baby homes at state expense after their births.
Triplets, quadruplets and many other babies are born every year at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, called their “parents’ home” by all the Korean women, boding well for the rosy future of the prospering country.
