March 22 is World Water Day.
Water is a very precious resource on the earth, and the existence and development of humanity are unthinkable apart from water.
Water covers three quarters of the surface of the earth (about 71%), but its resource used by humanity is only 2.53%. Glaciers and perpetual snow account for 68.7%, and underground water and the water of rivers, lakes and marshes, for 30.1% and 1.2%, respectively. On top of that, the amount of water keeps decreasing due to the abnormal weather phenomena caused by global warming.
According to recent data, about 3.6 billion people around the world suffer from water shortage for over one month every year, and its number is expected to increase to over 5 billion by 2050.
Severe water shortage is attributable to the fact that water consumption keeps increasing due to the population growth while freshwater resources on the earth gradually shrink because of climate change and the water quality of rivers becomes deteriorated due to environmental pollution.
So, the international community calls on all countries and regions to turn out in the work to overcome water crisis by developing water resources and making a rational use of them.
The DPRK attaches primary importance to the sustainable use and protection of water resources and directs great efforts to this end.
It is dynamically promoting the work to preserve and improve the water quality and environment of big and small rivers, including the Taedong and Pothong rivers.
It mapped out a 10-year-plan for afforestation and water conservation (2021-2030) and makes efforts to implement it. It is working out a mid- and long-term strategy for water conservation to put water management on a scientific basis in order to cope with the persisting abnormal climate phenomena, and is conducting in a far-sighted way the work to increase water resources and protect and manage them sustainably.
And it is vigorously conducting the work to prevent the pollution of water resources and make effective use of them by renovating and expanding the existing sewage and waste water treatment plants or building new ones.
This year’s theme for the day is “Accelerating Change.”
