One May day in Juche 50 (1961) President Kim Il Sung visited a farm in Kyongsong County, North Hamgyong Province.
He looked round rice seedbeds at the farm.
There was a reason why he paid attention to rice seedbeds.
The farm was located at the foot of Kwanmo Peak over 2 000 metres above sea level. As the area, affected by a long spell of winter season, had a relatively short farming period, the locals had engaged in dry-field farming alone and dared not to do rice farming.
He, in consideration of their wish, had taken all necessary measures for them to do rice farming there like the peasants in the plain areas.
Looking at rice seedlings with a worried air, he quietly asked his accompanying officials why the seedlings were in such poor conditions.
Hearing an official’s reply that they sowed seeds at the last time as the frozen land melted later than others, he was lost in a deep thought.
After a while, he told them that, as it was late for the period of rice-transplanting, it would be advisable to send a telegram to South Hamgyong Province to carry rice seedlings by air and try their transplanting on about one hectare of field. Still worrying about it, he made sure that experienced personnel in the west coastal areas were sent to the farm and other laggards in the northern east coast.
Accordingly, an airplane flew carrying rice seedlings from South Hamgyong Province, over 400km away from the farm. Finally, the locals fulfilled their long-cherished desire of rice farming.
