According to historical records, shuttlecock game was the one enjoyed by youngsters already in the period of Koryo.
Pakthongsaonhae, a book printed in the early 16th century, tells that shuttlecock game was played in midwinter while describing the then seasonal and holiday customs in Korea and the names of its folk games at that time and methods of playing them.
The game developed in various forms and ways by the period of the feudal Joson dynasty.
Hanchongmungam published in 1771 used such expressions as “kick shuttlecock” and “Several persons compete in shuttlecock kicking” while describing the game played at that time.
This shows that there were various methods of the game and different kinds of shuttlecocks in the latter half of the feudal Joson dynasty.
Haedongjukji printed later tells: According to the folklore, people do feats using a kind of ball made of pheasant feathers and it is called anbanggu when four persons kick it, samgakku when three kick it and ssangbonggu when two kick it. As a game in vogue in cold weather every year, it warms the body. It is called jegichagi (shuttlecock game) in our language.
