Fumigation means the fumes or steam which occur when medical plants are burnt or boiled.
Fumigation therapy is based on the calefactory effect of steam from medicinal decoction and pharmacological effect by absorption of medicines.
When traditional Koryo medicines are decocted, they are vaporized into essential oil materials which play various pharmacological roles and are absorbed well into the human body through sebaceous glands.
Its efficacy is quicker and more correct than the same dose of decoction of medicinal herbs.
The therapy makes it possible to treat not only skin diseases, women’s diseases, internal diseases, nose, ear and throat diseases but aseptic necrosis, radiculitis and paraplegia.
It is recognized as one of therapeutics to boost curative effectiveness while saving Koryo medicinal materials.
At present, many preventive and curative institutions across the country are widely introducing the therapy which proved effective in practice.
It was inscribed on the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
