The Mudu Peak scoria cone is one of the geological sites in the Mt Paektu area registered as a global geopark.
The parasitic volcano to Mt Paektu volcano has an altitude of 1 930 m above sea level and the relative height of some 150 m. The main body is of reddish brown cinder, with its upper part covered with pumice.
The bedrock is composed of basalt erupted during the first-stage eruption of the central volcano of Mt Paektu, overlaid with dome-shaped trachydacite that came during the second-stage eruption and cinder, a product of the explosive third-stage eruption of trachybasaltic magma.
The peak has an asymmetrical shape as its southern and western sides are thick with pumice stones but the eastern and northern sides are thinly covered with them.
Volcanic bombs are found in the pumice stones, and some places have fumaroles of volcanic gas coming out from underground.
The scoria cone is significant in the study of the topographic changes followed by volcanic eruption and the explosive eruption of basic magma.
