The construction of a grand canal linking the East and West Seas of Korea is a gigantic large-scale project to harness nature.

This grand plan to transform nature started in mid-April, 1952 when the Fatherland Liberation War was at its height.

President Kim Il Sung visited Kim Il Sung University which was located in Paekjon-ri (at that time), Sunchon County of South Phyongan Province, to discuss with scholars the plans for postwar rehabilitation.

For two days, he explained to the scholars in an earnest manner the issues for the economic development of the country from all angles, and set forth pressing research projects.

The President’s teachings on developing river transportation, in particular, evoked great impression of the people present there.

He said that we should pay attention to the issue of building a canal in order to develop the river transportation and that transportation in this area would be fully solved if we link the upper streams of the River Taedong and the River Ryesong by a canal. He also gave tasks to draw up a feasible master plan for canal construction on the basis of an in-depth study of building a canal that links the East and West Seas.

In the period when everyone was thinking of nothing but war, President Kim Il Sung provided a great blueprint for building a grand canal with far-sighted wisdom of looking as far as to tens of, and hundreds of years.

President Kim Il Sung devoted his all to materialize the great blueprint of a grand canal construction in his lifetime.

Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , who cherishes as his noble ideal the grand plan of President Kim Il Sung to transform nature, said in his historic policy speech delivered at the 7 th session of the 14 th Supreme People’s Assembly that we should make scientific calculations and accurate action plans for long-term economic projects including the construction of a grand canal linking the East and West Seas, and bring about successes without fail by putting national efforts.

In October last year, too, he emphasized again that the construction of a grand canal is the behest of President Kim Il Sung and that we should definitely realize his 70-odd-year-long desire.

Our people who have already experienced the exciting reality in which our dream and ideal are being fully realized under the wise leadership of respected Comrade Kim Jong Un for the last decade, are firmly convinced that the construction of a grand canal linking the East and West Seas will become an impressive reality.
