Kyokku, a kind of polo, is a game where theplayers ride horses and hit a ball with long clubs. It was played by Koreansfrom olden times.
Mounted warriors usually enjoyed thegame. They trained and played it whenever they could find time irrespective ofseason.
It became a custom to play Kyokku in May in the closing years ofKoryo. Such a tradition was inherited and maintained in the period of thefeudal Joson dynasty.
The game was enjoyed by not onlywarriors but also commoners, civil and military officials and even women. Toplay the game, they needed clubs, balls and a playing field.
The club was a long stick with an endlooking like a scoop.
The ball was made of wood, painted redand measured about 39cm in circumference.
According to a record from the 13thcentury, the length of the well-arranged field was about 450 feet and the fencearound it was hundreds of metres long.
The ball was placed some 50 feet fromthe starting line of the riders and the five-foot-wide goalpost was some 200 feetaway from the ball.
If they passed the ball through thegoalpost after performing some necessary movements, they would win.
As a good exercise for acquiringhorsemanship through basic movements and promoting agility, Kyokku was one of the folk games that helpedKoreans train their body and develop correct aiming and hitting power.
