Sports contest of workers in major industry sectors

The sports contest of workers in major industry sectors was held on the occasion of May Day.

In the first game of tug of war demonstrating teamwork by dint of strength, intelligence, technique and tactics, several teams drew attention, including the teams of coal, chemical, machine-building industry sectors and the land and maritime transport sector.

The games made deep impression on spectators as powerful yet vigorous teams played the games with single-minded unity between coaches and players.

“We could win the first game as we channelled great efforts into training. The expectations of workers for the games are very great. We will return the favour by winning the remaining games,” said Ji Tong Guk, section chief of the February 8 Jiktong Youth Coal Mine who coached the tug of war of the coal industry sector team.

Meanwhile, the football tournament, one of the symbolic events in sports, attracted interest from the beginning.

The fishery and coal industry sector teams belonging to group league A competed at Kim Il Sung Stadium on April 21.

The day’s event was fiercer since the group league matches would be decided by only two rounds of game. In the course of this, 12 goals were made.

In the match between the forestry sector and land and maritime transport sector, player No. 13 from the latter netted three goals, thus scoring the first hat trick.

Sports games of public health sector

The 11th sports games of the public health sector, which started on April 19, went on, divided into such events as basketball, volleyball and tennis.

The men’s basketball, the women’s volleyball, tennis, tug of war and other games were played at Pyongyang Indoor Stadium on April 21 as round-robin or knockout matches.

The men’s basketball match between the Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital and the Academy of Medical Sciences drew the attention of spectators for its drastic situation. The Academy of Medical Sciences, which took the initiative in the match, won it by employing diverse and unexpected tactics against the latter’s offensive and defence to turn the table on its opponent.

The Korea General Red Cross Hospital overpowered the Kim Man Yu Hospital in the men’s basketball event which was held earlier.

The Korea General Red Cross Hospital and the Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital teams saw off the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Kim Man Yu Hospital 3-2 and 2-0 respectively in the women’s volleyball event.

The tennis matches, which were held on a knockout basis divided into men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, were also close contests.

In the men’s doubles game between the Namsan Hospital and the Ryugyong Dental Hospital, the latter won the former.

The Ryugyong Dental Hospital team also beat another rival in the next-stage game.
