Lake Chon is a caldera lake which was formed by inward collapse of landforms of Mt Paektu volcanic body and then filled with water after the Millennium Eruption.
The formation of a lake presents a peculiar ecosystem, beautiful scenery, and novel natural phenomena in the caldera with great scientific, educational and tourist value.
Covering an area of 9.16 square kilometres, the lake is 14.4 kilometres in circumference, 213.3 metres deep on average, 384 metres at its deepest, and its gross volume of water is 1 955 million cubic metres.
It is the deepest natural lake with the largest water volume in the country.
By the lake there are Paektu, Ragwon and Paegam spas. The annual average temperature of the lake is -4.9℃. The coldest month is January and the hottest one July. The water begins to freeze in December and melts in June next year.
The lake is inhabited by floating plants, underwater plants and chars.
Frequently observed there are water-spouts and such electrical phenomena as thunder and lightning caused by thick clouds.
The shores of the lake are carpeted with alpine plants, including rhododendron, mountain heath, tundra rhododendron, two-colour crazyweed and Salix schwerinii .
As the one and only creation of the Millennium Eruption, the lake still draws interest and curiosity of the world people as it is located on the highest place in Northeast Asia and has a peculiar ecosystem.
