Kim Hui Su, born into a beekeeper’s family, works at the Taesongsan Pleasure Ground Management Station in the capital city of Pyongyang.
True to the policy of the country on developing rural economy in many-sided way, his father had organized a beekeeping sub-workteam for the first time in Kosong County, Kangwon Province in the mid-1950s and engaged himself in beekeeping for nearly 50 years.
From his childhood Kim Hui Su grew up looking at his father’s beekeeping. After graduating from a middle school, he majored in honeybee science at Wonsan University of Agriculture and, later, he was appointed a lecturer of honeybee science at Pyongyang University of Agriculture.
“As I grew older, I wanted to become a beekeeper like my father,” he said. He started beekeeping three years back.
Mt Taesong with beautiful landscape and various species of flowers in full bloom was an ideal place for beekeeping.
Every year he collects nectar from acacia and other species of flowers from early spring to autumn and, sometimes, tours all parts of the country in search of flowers.
He has about 50 beehives, each of which has less than 30 000 honeybees. Each beehive produces 30-50kg of honey every year.
He finds his greatest happiness in collecting honey from the beehives.
“Beekeeping is good in every respect. Propolis, beeswax and royal jelly produced together with honey are all useful. Beekeeping improves my health as well as my living standards,” he said.
Every year he produces large amounts of honey and bee products by introducing modern science and technologies into the management of bees and processing of their by-products while preserving the beekeeping experiences and customs created by the Korean ancestors.
He is a member of the Korean Beekeepers Association.
