West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

The Daesong Department Store, remodeled as a comprehensive and multi-functional service centre, bears an imprint left by the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un while he was on an endless inspection tour for the people’s wellbeing.

At Sunday midnight on April 7, Juche 108 (2019), he visited the department store without finding time to relieve his fatigue caused by his inspection trips to the construction sites of Samjiyon, the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist resort and the Yangdok hot spring resort.

An official of the department store briefed him on the renovation such as the period and scale of the project and expanded areas. After learning in detail about the preparations for commercial service, Kim Jong Un was very pleased as a modern comprehensive service centre has been built in the capital city of Pyongyang.

At the flower counter, he pointed to the need to package goods in various forms as required by customers. When he dropped in at the building materials exhibition, he acquainted himself with the prices of goods and gave meticulous instructions on providing convenience to people in business activities ranging from purchase to sale.

Making the rounds of different places from the ground floor to the third floor, he highly praised the department store as perfect and stylish, and expressed great satisfaction as it was in a position to better supply citizens with various kinds of quality foodstuffs, clothes, shoes, household appliances, daily necessities, school things and supplies for cultural purposes.

A day was dawning when he left the department store after giving officials detailed instructions which would serve as a guideline in commercial service.
