In terms of variety, content and profundity of its tourist objects, Paektusan Geopark is the top tourist attraction in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It is home to lots of historical relics and remains, most of which are in or around the geological sites of the geopark.
Chairman Kim Jong Il ’s birthplace in the Paektusan Secret Camp lies at the foot of Jong Il Peak, a major geological site, and Samjiyon Grand Monument stands on the shore of Lake Samji.
The geopark has great potential for tourist development as its volcanic landform, plants, animals, climate and natural and cultural landscape are organically combined into a harmonious whole that is unique and wonderful spatially.
The tour of the geopark is about its indigenous volcanic landform, ecological environment, history and culture.
The geopark is very rich in geodiversity. As it went through all the stages of shield volcano, stratovolcano and explosive eruptions, the Mt Paektu volcano embraces products of different forms of volcanic eruptions, signs of volcanic evolutions, and vivid volcanic topography—a “textbook of volcanology”. That’s why it attracts volcanologists, university students and ordinary people.
Sustainable efforts are directed to the development of the geopark in a bid to promote the balanced development of tourism and environment there.
The tour routes are drawing the interest of tourists as they include diverse and profound tourist sights.
A funicular railway is in operation from the southern foot of Hyangdo Peak to the summit of Mt Paektu with two stops Paektu and Hyangdo in between.
Cable car is available from Hyangdo Station down to the shore of Lake Chon.
Relevant institutions co-sponsor skiing and other winter sports competitions and an ice sculpture festival every year amid the nationwide interest, drawing visitors both in summer and winter.
Every year, numerous local people including youth and students take part in the regular tours of Mt Paektu in groups or individually.
