“They devoted themselves to treat my blind husband, taking the place of his flesh and blood. Such affection and devotion were not recorded on his clinical chart, but they have been etched in the mind of all of our family members.”
This is a paragraph of a letter written by Kim Song Gum, spouse of Choe Pyong Gwan who is a special-class honoured disabled soldier resident in Puksu-dong No. 1 in Taedonggang District, Pyongyang. She sent the letter of thanks to the medical workers of the department of gastroenterology at Kim Man Yu Hospital for having brought her husband out of the jaws of death.
It was in the early hours of March 9 when Choe Pyong Gwan slipped into a coma caused by acute necrotic pancreatitis.
He was immediately taken to the intensive care unit of the hospital in an ambulance. An emergency treatment was launched. A team led by department chief Kim Chol Yong held a series of consultations to plan a scientific procedure.
As the patient was suffering from cerebral thrombosis sequela, medical workers did their best for him to develop no other symptoms.
Their sincere devotion, coupled with the application of interventional therapy, made him recover from coma three times and walk out of the hospital in 45 days.
Besides, the department resuscitated and treated dozens of most serious and other cases last year.
With sincere devotion and high credentials, medical workers of the department presented valuable research findings to the 27th national medical symposium on digestive internal medicine, the 40th national medical symposium on hepatopathy, and other events to draw the attention of the medical circle. They were also introduced by foreign journals.
“Whenever letters of thanks come from the people who received treatment at our department, we are greatly proud of being medical workers saving human lives,” said Kim Chol Yong.
