Kim Song Hui works as a women’s football coach at the Pyongyang Sports Club. She was honoured with the title of Labour Hero and People’s Athlete.
In primary school days, she was smaller than her peers.
When she decided to take up football, both her parents and friends were all surprised.
Her parents would not allow their only daughter to be involved in sports as she was small and seemingly weak. But Song Hui would not give in either. She played on their affection on one hand and threw a tantrum on the other.
At last, her parents and brothers caved in, but they thought she would find it hard and give it up of her own accord.
So, Song Hui began to learn football at the school’s football group.
When she was to wear uniform for the first time, she chose No. 7 because she was attracted by the number.
Two years later, when she played at the then Pothonggang Extracurricular Juvenile Sports School, she wore No. 7 uniform and ran as a midfielder.
Small as she was, she had a lot of stamina and, in particular, she had a better nose for the goal.
As she was good at scoring, football fans, coaches and colleagues called her “Pothonggang’s No. 7”. When she left home for the Pyongyang Sports Club, she told her parents that she would not return home before flying the national flag at international games.
Her performance as a midfielder was instrumental in her team’s victory, and it won her another nickname “Pyongyang’s No. 7”.
She was always quick to move from a midfield position to a forward position and did not miss a decisive scoring opportunity. Her colleagues said she was small but smart.
Song Hui scored a hat trick in the final match of the third world junior women’s football championships to win the silver boot.
She went on to contribute to her team’s triumphs in different international competitions.
Afterwards, she went to Korea University of Physical Education, and after graduation she was assigned to her club as a coach. Since then, she has devoted herself to training young footballers.
Among her students are Chae Un Gyong who was awarded the golden glove at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup in 2024.
“Whenever I step onto the pitch, I still feel like hearing the spectators cheering me, calling ‘Pothonggang’s No. 7’ and ‘Pyongyang’s No. 7’,” said Kim Song Hui. “To live up to their calls, I will continue to be on the pitch.”
