U.S. Troops in Japan – Root Cause of Misfortune

Date: 22/07/2024 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

The U.S. troops in Japan, despite strong protests from the Okinawa residents, went defiant in conducting another parachute drill at Kadena U.S. air base on July 8.

Kadena air base, being situated in the urban district, has become a place of frequent accidents where U.S. troops, due to carelessness, fall on the private houses in the middle of parachute, keeping the residents under constant uneasiness and fear.

As regards to the drill this time, the lieutenant governor of Okinawa prefecture filed a strong protest to the Japanese defence and foreign ministries, saying that “it tramples upon the sentiments of the residents.”

The governor of Okinawa prefecture, at a time of meeting with vice-foreign minister in May, had urged him to use his good offices make U.S. side to conduct the drill outside the prefecture or at a foreign base while protesting the U.S. drill stretching into 5 months.

However, the U.S. couldn’t care less about the Okinawans’ will for a peaceful life and is adopting an arrogant attitude.

Japan and U.S. have basically agreed to conduct drill at an emergency landing field of Ie Island (Ie county of Okinawa), all but the exceptional cases. However, the U.S. troops in Japan are persistently repeating the drill at the Kadena air base, insisting that airplanes cannot land and take off on the outdated runway of Ie Island.

The residents are in constant unrest and fear due to the U.S. troops stationed in Okinawa.

Different kinds of accidents including a plane crash continue unabated and all sorts of violent crimes including rape, murder and robbery committed by the U.S. troops are found regardless of time.

According to the conservative data released by the police of Okinawa, the number of criminal cases in Okinawa committed by the U.S. troops in Japan from 1972 to 2023 reached almost 6,235.

It’s quite natural that the Japanese denounce the U.S. troops stationed in Okinawa as the “General Headquarters of Crimes”.
