The following happened in Changsong, a mountainous county in North Phyongan Province in the western part of the DPRK.
One day several months ago, a son of Kwon Jin Ok living in Neighbourhood Unit No. 6, Changsong County Town, got injured in a leg in an accident too severely to go to kindergarten.
The next day, his teacher visited his home bringing dairy products, bread and eggs and taught him the lesson he was supposed to take that day.
As the teacher’s visit continued, Kwon expressed her gratitude and asked her not to have such a trouble any longer.
With a smile, the teacher told the boy’s mother that it is a demand of the childcare law of the socialist state that dairy products and other nutritious foods should be supplied also to the children who cannot go to kindergarten due to unavoidable reasons and that the kindergarten teachers are duty-bound to fulfil the demand.
There is also a story about a former worker at the county light labour workshop management board of the Social Pensioners House under the North Phyongan Provincial People’s Committee.
When he knew that he could not work normally as others did, he was so shocked that he could not go to sleep for several nights.
Then one day an official from the county people’s committee visited him and said that he would go to the social pensioners house with him. The official said to the puzzled worker that the state had established the light labour workshops in various parts of the country long before for those unable to work normally and the social pensioners house performed a mission to provide, through the light labour workshops, curative work and nutrition- and tonic-based treatment to those medically judged, so that they could return to their previous jobs.
Afterwards, he worked six hours a day at a light labour workshop. All the items of the daily schedule at the workshop were oriented to the treatment of its workers. Then he realized that all this was thanks to the law on social insurance and social security.
Indeed, the social benefits reach everyone no matter where he or she lives in the country.
