Steady efforts are being made in the DPRK to promote sign language education for the people with hearing impairment.
Workshops and deliberation are conducted on a regular basis to standardize sign language.
A workshop for training sign language teachers was held between February and July in cooperation with the Deaf Association of Korea and the Sign Language Interpreters Association of Korea.
The Central Committee of the Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled hosted a meeting on September 3-4 to deliberate the Korean sign language, which drew members of the DAK and SLIAK, headmasters of provincial schools for children with hearing impairment, professional sign language instructors and relevant officials.
The meeting deliberated and decided issues arising in the standardization of sign language and improvement of the teaching at schools for children with hearing impairment.
In addition, there were a deliberation of more than 100 words to be added to the teaching materials of kindergartens and primary schools for hearing-impaired children and a redeliberation of 250 signs that have different meanings.
“Thanks to the state benefits, sign language education receives a fresh boost every year, which gives a good chance to people with hearing impairment to develop their skills,” says the chairman of the DAK.
