As part of the national intangible cultural heritage, Korean roofing consists of roof-building methods and its styles that have been refined and consolidated through a long period of time to meet the national tastes.
According to their styles, Korean roofs are divided into a gable roof, hipped roof, hip-saddle roof and others.
Korean roofs are highlighted by elegant and gentle curves. To take an example, the Pohyon Temple in Mt Myohyang, one of the celebrated mountains of the DPRK, provides a glimpse into the outstanding architecture and fine artistry of Korean ancestors.
The Taeung Hall, the largest and most splendid building at the Pohyon Temple, showcases a gable roof, which constitutes a smooth curve above the low walls and ensures the balance of the building as a whole.
Korean ancestors used to build roofs and pillars with unique yet light curves and curved sides and decorate them with soft, gentle and bright colours.
Korean roofing has been widely applied to monumental edifices such as the Grand People’s Study House and the People’s Palace of Culture.
The formative representation of Korean roofing, an element of the national architectural styles, has undergone steady development in a symbolic reflection of the sentiment and resourceful spirit of the Korean people.
