The Party Committee of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army which dynamically steered the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle in the first half of the last century left indelible traces in the annals of the building of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

Having laid the foundations for building a party by forming the Down-with-Imperialism Union on October 17, 1926 and the Society for Rallying Comrades as the first party organization on July 3, 1930, Comrade Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) pushed ahead with the work to establish a central leadership body capable of giving unified leadership to the party organizations at all levels organized in many areas at home and abroad and realizing unified guidance over the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.

At a meeting of military and political cadres held in Macun, Wangqing County of China on March 9, Juche 23 (1934), he set forth a policy of organizing the Party Committee in the KPRA unit and making the party committee perform the function of giving unified guidance not only to the party organizations in the KPRA but also to all party organizations. This was a truly wise and revolutionary step in view of the prevailing situation where the Korean revolution as a whole was proceeding with the anti-Japanese armed struggle as the main element and the essential requirement of the building of party organizations.

After making thorough preparations for forming the Party Committee of the KPRA, he convened a meeting in Dahuangwai of China on May 31, Juche 23 (1934), at which he proclaimed the formation of the Party Committee of the KPRA.

It was a powerful party leadership body which regarded the Juche idea as its guiding ideology and struggled for its realization and a supreme leadership body which controlled and led all party organizations at different levels of the army and local party organizations. Looking back on those days, Kim Il Sung recalled: We had expanded our party organizations in close relations with the party organizations of all counties in Jiandao, concentrating our efforts on consolidating the Party Committee of the KPRA, and trained hardcore elements, who would be needed to form party organizations in the homeland on an extensive scale in future.

With the formation of the Party Committee of the KPRA, a well-regulated system of guidance over party organizations at all levels was established and the party leadership over the Korean revolution as a whole, including the anti-Japanese armed struggle and the anti-Japanese national united front movement, was fully realized.

As the Korean people had their own party organization and fought under its guidance, they could achieve an uninterrupted upsurge in the overall Korean revolution centred on the anti-Japanese armed struggle in the face of unprecedentedly arduous conditions, realize the historic cause of national liberation on August 15, 1945, and found the Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10, 1945.
