China Urges Japan to Stop Disturbing Sino-Japanese Relations and Peace and Stability in Taiwan Strait

With regard to the recent passage of a Japanese warship through the Taiwan Strait, the spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry commented as follows:

The Taiwan issue is a matter pertaining to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China. It is also the red line that should never be crossed as it relates to the political foundation governing China-Japan relations.

The Chinese military responded to the entrance into the Taiwan Strait by a warship, belonging to the Self-Defence Forces of Japan, according to its law and regulations.

China is now directing much attention to the political motive behind this action of Japan and has already made strong protests to Japan.

In the 1972 China-Japan Joint Statement, the Japanese government recognized the government of the People’s Republic of China as the country’s sole legal government. Subsequently, the government of the People’s Republic of China re-clarified that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory.

The Japanese government fully understood and respected this stand of the Chinese government, and agreed to conform to its stand stated in Article No. 8 of the Potsdam Declaration.

China calls strongly on Japan to keep to its agreement regarding the Taiwan issue and carefully choose its words and actions.

It calls on Japan to not cause any chaos in the peace and stability of Sino-Japanese relations and the Taiwan Strait.
