An increasing number of units cultivate bamboo-willow trees, enjoying much benefit from them.
This tree grows fast with a high density of cultivation. It is of high utility value as it can be used as firewood and timber.
“We started growing these trees eight years ago. When we planted them, they were around 1-1.5 metres high. Now they are more than 20 metres tall,” says Ri Yong Il, manager of the Anju Pig Farm.
The towering trees growing in and around the farm make it look like a resort rather than a stockbreeding unit.
The trees serve as a shade in summer and a windbreak on windy days. In the former days when it constructed or repaired buildings, the farm suffered from a shortage of timber. With the cultivation of those trees the difficulties were automatically gone and the tree leaves are given to rabbits as their fodder.
If you visit several farms in Phyongwon County, South Phyongan Province, you can see the trees growing tall and healthy.
The trees line the well-arranged embankments along streams in Sambong-ri.
“The trees reinforce the embankments helping prevent flood damage. They also form a windbreak forest and provide better conditions for farming. They enable us to meet the demand for bow-shaped supporting sticks and other farming materials and for timber. Tree leaves are used as animal fodder. After all, we are killing several birds with a single stone,” says Pak Yong Ae, manager of the local farm.
The farmers are happy to see the trees grow fast beyond recognition and make contributions to the farm’s economy in a few years.
Songsok-ri produces more than 10 000 saplings every year in the tree nursery set up in every workteam of the farm.
The campaign of planting bamboo-willow trees with a 100-percent utility rate is competitively held in several ris of the county.
This year more than 20 farms in the county have extensively planted the species which is also as a good material for making paper.
