Mirae Scientists Street and Ryomyong Street in the capital city of Pyongyang, DPRK, marked a new milestone in the architectural development of the country.

One of their architectural aesthetic features is that they retain the seed and theme well in the formation of the streets.

Ri Un Gwang, section chief of Faculty of Architecture No. 1 of Pyongyang University of Architecture, said that the seed of Mirae Scientists Street is the Workers’ Party of Korea’s idea of attaching importance to science and education to make a leap forward by dint of science and guarantee the future by dint of education, and the theme of the street’s representation is the orbit of electron.

In particular, the 53-storeyed apartment building has the plane resembling the atomic structure, the profile looking like flower petals with one plane laid upon another, and a symbolic tower depicting the atomic nucleus on its top. Together with the tower symbolic of the street standing at its entrance, the building clearly shows the character of the street.

Ryomyong Street reflects the idea that the dawn of the Korean revolution breaks over the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the supreme sanctuary of Juche, where President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) and Chairman Kim Jong Il (1942-2011) are preserved in their lifetime appearance, and over Ryongnam Hill where Kim Jong Il made a historic pledge to add lustre to his country. It also demonstrates the spirit of socialist Korea which achieves victories and epoch-making successes by dint of single-minded unity and self-reliance and self-development.

As for the 70-storeyed skyscraper on the street, it was the highest dwelling apartment block in the country at the time when it was built. The skyscraper looks weighty as circular pillars are set up on the four corners and rings bind the building in five tiers.

Mirae Scientists Street and Ryomyong Street show a new phase of the development of architectural art.

Jong Song Chol, section chief of the Pyongyang Urban Planning and Designing Institute, said that Mirae Scientists Street is a peculiar street with large tower-style and bundle-style high-rise apartment houses and skyscrapers, many public buildings, resting places and sports parks arranged in a comprehensive way while retaining the feature of the section of the Taedong River between Chungsong and Yanggak bridges where it is situated.

Ryomyong Street is composed of cosy multi-storeyed architectural group and magnificent skyscrapers in the form of petals, sailing boats, waves, beehives and cylinders with respectability as its core. And techniques for making effective use of natural energy including solar and geothermal energy have been introduced into it, so that formative, artistic and greening aspects have been realized on a high level.

Different colours were also applied in the formation of the streets.

Whereas seven colours were applied to Mirae Scientists Street, the colours used in Ryomyong Street are white and green, so as to make it suggestive of the white birch forest in Mt Paektu.

These streets are closely associated with the wise leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un . He indicated the general directions and principles of their formation and examined their layouts so that they could be built as suited to the appearance of a cultured socialist country.
